In terms of the protocol, states must protect the rights and interests of child victims of trafficking, child prostitution and child pornography.

Special Rapporteur on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography - On 20 November 1989, the United Nations General Assembly in New York adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This international instrument recognizes "that in all countries in the world, there are children living in exceptionally difficult conditions, and that such children need special consideration".
