Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy - The Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy (PDH) is a technology used in telecommunications networks to transport large quantities of data over digital transport equipment such as fibre optic and microwave radio systems. The term plesiochronous is derived from Greek plesio, meaning near, and chronos, time, and refers to the fact that PDH networks run in a state where different parts of the network are almost, but not quite perfectly, synchronised.

Virtual concatenation - Virtual concatenation is an inverse multiplexing technique used to split SONET/SDH bandwidth into logical groups, which may be transported or routed independently. Alternate SONET/SDH concatenation techniques include: (i) contiguous concatenation and (ii) arbitrary concatenation.

ROADM - A Reconfigurable Add Drop Multiplexer (ROADM), is a new form of add-drop multiplexer that essentially adds the ability to switch individual networks. The key differentiating features of ROADMs is the ability to switch traffic and both the wavenlength and SONET/SDH layers.
