Secret ballot - [Polling by William Hogarth] (1755); Before the secret ballot was introduced voter intimidation was commonplace
Ballot Act 1872 - In 1872, Gladstone reluctantly introduced the Ballot Act, which required that British general elections to Parliament and local government election use the secret ballot. Previously employers or land owners were able to use their sway over their employees to influence the vote, by being present or sending representatives to check on votes.
Compulsory voting - Compulsory voting is a practice that requires citizens to vote in elections or to attend a polling place and get their name crossed off the electoral roll. The term "compulsory voting" is actually a misnomer: because of the secret ballot, a person can only be compelled to cast a ballot, whether they have voted or not.
Political privacy - Political privacy has been a concern since voting systems emerged in ancient times. The secret ballot is the simplest and most widespread measure to ensure that political views are not known to anyone other than the voter themself - it is nearly universal in modern democracy, and considered a basic right of citizenship.
